3 Gardening Mistakes You’re Definitely Making (And What To Do Instead)

Look, gardening’s meant to be relaxing — a bit of dirt therapy between BBQs and beers. But even the keenest weekend warriors slip up sometimes. Don’t worry, we don’t judge.

Before you blame your poor plants for “being dramatic,” here are three classic mistakes that might be holding your garden or lawns back (and how to fix ‘em before Dan Doo or your local lawn and gardening service catches up to you).

1. Planting Without a Plan

Hey, we’ve all been there — the garden centre at your local Bunnings or Mitre 10 seduces you. One minute you’re “just having a look,” the next you’ve got a trolley full of random plants that all want different things.

👉 Candoo Tip: Group plants by sunlight and watering needs. Shade-lovers in one spot, sun-chasers in another. And don’t forget to put taller plants at the back and smaller plants at the front so it gets all the proper light it needs.

2. Getting A Bit Trigger-Happy

More water = happier plants, right? Wrong! Overwatering drowns roots faster than under-watering wilts them.

👉 Candoo Tip: Check the top few centimetres of soil before watering. If it’s still damp, step away from the hose. Early morning watering is best (yes, even your plants like a fresh start to the day). This simple habit also helps your lawn mowing routine — grass that’s properly hydrated (but not soggy) cuts cleaner and stays greener.

3. Cutting Back at the Wrong Time

You’ve finally got your secateurs out — good on you! They can be intimidating, but you’re doing the right thing getting hands-on with your plants. The trick is knowing when to prune. Pruning at the wrong moment can send plants into shock or ruin next season’s growth.

👉 Candoo Tip: Rule of thumb: always prune after flowering, not before. And don’t go Edward Scissorhands on everything at once! Light trims often beat one big chop.

Gardening’s not about perfection. It’s about progress (and maybe showing off to the neighbours just a little). Make these small fixes, and your plants will thank you with lush growth, fewer tantrums, and a garden that looks accidentally a bit too professional. Oops… don’t thank us.

And when in doubt? Let the Candoo Crew handle the lawn mowing and garden care so you don’t need to.
